Itinerary

DAY 1: TRAVELING

Depart from Washington (IAD) for your South African Airways flight to Dakar.

 

DAY 2: SENEGAL

On arrival at Léopold Sédar Senghor International Airport you will be met and transferred to your hotel.

Today’s activities will be determined based on your arrival time. You may relax and unwind or start the tour of Dakar and vicinity.

DAY 3: SENEGAL

After breakfast depart the hotel and take a 20-minute ferry ride to Gorée Island. The tour includes a visit to the ethnographic museum and a lecture by the curator on the history of the Goree, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the afternoon return to Dakar and go on a city tour. Visit the colourful markets including Tilen Market, famous for a variety of medicinal herbs and traditional healers. Stop by Dakar’s grand Mosque, the Presidential Palace, and the Artisans Market.

DAY 4: SENEGAL

After breakfast depart to Saint Louis located in the north of Senegal. Stop in Lompoul for a camel ride on the sand dunes; from the top dunes enjoy a

panorama view of the coastline. Continue to Saint Louis. Afternoon, city tour of Saint Louis. Explore the narrow streets flanked by houses with carved wooden

balconies and verandas. Visit the fishing village of Guet Ndar.

DAY 5: SENEGAL

After breakfast complete the city tour of Saint Louis then depart to Kaolack in the South of Senegal. Stop at Touba, the holy city of Mouridism. Continue to

Kaolack an important regional market town and Senegal’s main peanut farming, trading and processing center.

DAY 6: THE GAMBIA

After breakfast you will depart the hotel to Banjul. Detour for a journey “up-river” to one of Gambia’s most visited sites, Juffureh, the land of Alex Haley’s “Roots”. You will arrive first in Albreda which gained fame in the period of slavery as a result of its Flag Pole, which many believed would guarantee freedom to anyone who touched it after escaping from nearby James Island. Observe the ruins of the Sao Domingo Church, reputed to be one of the oldest churches in West Africa, erected by the Portuguese during the 17th century. Continue to the village of Juffureh to where the ancestry of “Kunta Kinte” of Roots fame was traced. The restored original home of the Kinte clan still occupied by the Kinte family can be visited during your time here. Early evening, continue to Banjul.

DAY 7: THE GAMBIA

After an early breakfast depart by ferry to Barra. From Barra, drive to Kuntaur in Eastern Gambia to see the Wassu Stone Circles, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The circles are believed to be burial mounds of Kings and Chiefs, estimated to be more than 1,200 years old.

DAY 8: SENEGAL

After breakfast depart to Saly, en-route stop at sites of interest. Arrive in Saly early evening in time to enjoy the beach before nightfall.

DAY 9: SENEGAL

After breakfast depart the hotel and travel to Bandia National Park for a safari. Bandia Game Reserve is located in a 3500-hectare wide conservation area. Here you will see numerous species native to Senegal including: buffalos, antelopes, impala gazelles, monkeys, tortoises and crocodile in addition to white rhinoceros, kudu, elands, cape moose, giraffes, ostriches, zebras. Stop by the crocodile pool where animals come to drink and buffalos wallow in the mud. You will see numerous bird species including the small hornbills, grey heron, eagles, blackbirds and kingfishers. Bandia wildlife reserve is an ecological jewel in Senegal’s crown. Return to Saly resort in the late afternoon.
