Landing in the Okavango Delta – Botswana

One of our Senior Africa Specialist – Crystal recently toured the Okavango Delta, she wrote a short description of what it is like as you arrive in Botswana and head over to the Okavango Delta.

I began my adventure at Xugana Island Lodge, it is a wonderful safari vacation destination. However, I suggest this be one of your last stops. This incredible lodge is located in the Okavango Delta. All your safaris and tours are done on a motorboat, mokoro (similar to a canoe), or you can take walking Safaris, which truly makes you feel a part of nature. The focus is the beauty itself – a place to relax and unwind while on vacation.

When I stepped off the plane onto the Tarmac in Maun Botswana, I was in another world. I did a short walk to a small airport building about 100 feet from the plane. I quickly cleared customs grabbed my duffle and went on to the next room where I found a smiling face holding a sign with my last name. I was given a paper with all my future charter flights and taken to the waiting area. Within minutes, I was helped to my next flight, a seven seater, which is the best way to get around the remote areas of Botswana.

We were off the ground quickly and I enjoyed the views as we headed into the Okavango Delta, the largest inland Delta in the world. It was a perfect landing on a dirt airstrip.

As we arrived, we were greeted by Lodge staff and taken aboard a small motorboat to Xugana Island Lodge. The boat has six individual seats and a small bench seat in the back, our guide/driver is seated behind us all in the Captain Seat.

The second the engine started and we turned to face the waters of the Okavango Delta the view was breath taking. The wind began to hit my face and we were flying through the channels as we dogged tall Papyrus reeds. Just when I thought the channel was getting smaller and smaller, we turned the last corner and it opened up into a large Lagoon. We began to slow down which helped me take in all the sights and sounds around the boat. I then began to realize on the other side of the Lagoon is Xugana Island Lodge. I could just make out the outlines of staff waiving from this hidden paradise.

From that moment on I couldn’t stop smiling and I knew this was going to be a true Adventure.
