Garden Route
To many folk ‘the Garden Route’ is a popular region for a vacation in South Africa. Those that know more about the area know that this is a misleading term as it is not a ‘garden’. The Garden Route is a 125 mile stretch of South Africa’s south coast that boasts lush forests full of birdlife leading down to long white sandy beaches, rolling waves, whales and schools of dolphins.
The area is believed to be an inspiration to Tolkien’s magical writings with its dramatic rocky mountains dominating the skyline on one side and rolling waves with enticing sandy beaches on the other. By the time you reach the Tstisikamma Forest and mountain range beyond, the landscape is a magical fairyland of lush ferns and abundant bird life.
For those who have time on their side, SAA vacations recommends driving one of the spectacular mountain passes that meanders all the way down to the sea. Take time to stop and enjoy the view with your cameras.
Knysna lies in the heart of the area and is a good base to explore from. Families can enjoy the Elephant Sanctuary, where you can physically interact with some rescued animals; Birds of Eden, which is a visual spectacle of hundreds of species of exotic birds and Monkeyland, where you can take a guided tour of the huge monkey enclosure and see these rescued animals now looking happy and healthy.
Nature enthusiasts can embrace the outdoors with beautiful mountain walks or beach trails; golf enthusiasts can enjoy one of many internationally acclaimed golf courses such as Pezula, Simola or Fancourt; adrenelin junkies can experience the worlds highest bungy jump at Bloukrans Bridge and food lovers can gorge on oysters in Knysna, especially at the annual oyster festival in July every year.
This spectacular stretch of coastline is well worth a visit.
