Kenya Horizon B: 8 Days

From:

$3,599* Restrictions apply 3599
Kenya Safari Park Hotel
Kenya Safari Park Hotel giant-giraffe Serena sweetwaters tented camp Morani the Tame Rhino Sarova Lionhill standard room Mara Plains

This compact 8-day safari, contrasts the cool green of the forests of Mount Kenya region, with the strikingly arid beauty of the northern Samburu National Reserve, before allowing for two whole days on safari in the magnificence of the world-famous Masai Mara National Reserve. Capitalizing on road transport you will enjoy exclusive game viewing opportunities and refined luxury in the African bush featuring one of Kenya’s most renowned and gracious hotels and three of her most charming luxury tented camps.

Day 1

Depart from New York (JFK) or Washington Dulles (IAD) for your South African Airways flight to South Africa and onward connection to Nairobi.

Day 2

Jambo! Upon arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, you will be met by an Africa Classic Escapes representative who will assist with your transfer to your hotel for overnight.

Situated 160 km south of the equator, Nairobi is the capital of Kenya and boasts one of the finest climates in the world. This modern, cosmopolitan city is the regional headquarters for many African and Indian Ocean businesses. With delegates attracted here from around the world, they come for the friendliness of the people, the modern hotel facilities and the vast array of fascinating options available throughout the city. Although the ‘City in the sun’ is relatively young by global standards, it has fascinating history capturing explorers, missionaries, wars, cultural diversity and politics etc, each leaving their mark on the city center in some way.

Overnight on a Bed and Breakfast basis at Safari Park Hotel.

Day 3

Begin your exploration of this magnificent country as you drive on its rugged roads, through rich farm land, en route to Samburu Reserve, which lies 200 miles north of Nairobi on the hot and arid fringes of the vast northern region of Kenya. Arrive in time for lunch followed by a game viewing activity.

The reserve is within the lands of the colorful Samburu people, close relatives of the Maasai, and home to a number of wildlife species rarely found elsewhere in Kenya; Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, and Beisa oryx, all found only north of the equator. The graceful gerenuk, an antelope with its characteristic long neck, spends much of its time in a bipedal stance seeking relaxation in the sparse scrub that grows in this harsh terrain. This dramatic landscape is blanketed by the hot equatorial sun for most of the year. Relief comes from the cool waters of the Uaso Nyiro ("Brown") River, which rises to the west on the foothills of the Aberdares and which vanishes beyond Samburu in the soggy expanse known as the Lorian swamp. The scenery in Samburu is magnificent and the birdlife awesome.

Ashnil Samburu Camp is located in the Buffalo Springs Reserve, separated from Samburu Reserve by the Uaso Nyiro River. This is the perfect lodge from which to view large numbers of elephants using the river to drink, bathe and play. Huge troops of baboons patrol the riverbanks daily and in the camp itself vervet monkeys socialize in the trees. Each of the 24 exclusive, comfortable, deluxe tents gives perfect views of the river, surrounding beautiful landscapes and all life this brown river supports. Every spacious tent consists of a king size or twin beds, dressing area, sitting area, luggage rack, and ensuite facilities.

Overnight on a Full Board basis at Ashnil Samburu Camp

Day 4

Enjoy morning and afternoon game viewing activities.

Day 5

After breakfast, depart for Ol Pejeta Conservancy to your luxurious tented camp, which has magnificent views of Mt. Kenya.

The Ol Pejeta Conservancy is a 90,000 acre wildlife conservancy. Situated on the equator, in the Laikipia District, between the foot hills of the Aberdares and the magnificent snow capped Mount Kenya, the Ol Pejeta Conservancy boasts an astounding variety of animals. At Ol Pejeta you will see the big five; elephants, rhinos, buffaloes, lions, leopard and cheetah. Hosting the largest population of Black Rhinos in East Africa, the Ol Pejeta Conservancy is home to more than 85 black rhinos and plays a significant role in the conservation of this species in the region. Ol Pejeta is also home to four of the world’s last 8 remaining northern white rhinos, which were transferred from the Dvur Kralove Zoo in the Czech Republic in December 2009, in a bid to save this species from extinction. Visitors to the conservancy have an opportunity to see the northern white rhinos.

Your accommodation is located in a sheltered oasis, clustered around a water hole and set in the pristine calm of the private conservancy, offers a charming blend of under-canvas ambiance and safari luxury.

The camp features thirty-nine luxury tents, each with its own private veranda overlooking the water hole. The central Rhino Restaurant is housed in the former manager's house of this once colonial farm, and offers both regional and international cuisine. Also within the house is the Kashoggi Bar and lounge, which centres on a blazing log fire. The Waterhole Bar, built in the style of a game-viewing hide, overlooks the waterhole and offers unrivalled wildlife-watching.

Overnight on a Full Board basis at Sweetwaters Tented Camp

Day 6

Continue with your journey as you depart to Lake Nakuru, perhaps the most famous of Africa’s great, shallow soda lakes, home to hundreds of thousands of Greater and Lesser Flamingoes and a great many other water bird species.

Lunch is enjoyed at Thompson Falls restaurant.

Arrive with an afternoon game drive before proceeding to your comfortable lodge with spectacular views of the lake.

Built in a natural dais, overlooking one of the world's greatest ornithological spectacles, the Sarova Lion Hill Lodge impresses every guest with its panoramic view of the pink shoreline created by the numerous flamingos on Lake Nakuru. The lodge is situated within the heart of Kenya's Rift Valley, nestled on the banks of one of East Africa's most famous soda lakes, and surrounded by natural flora and fauna in its beautiful grounds. You can enjoy the vista from the privacy of your own verandah. Each of the 64 rustic chalets has a private secluded verandah and en suite bathroom. Additional amenities include the Flamingo Restaurant, the Rift Valley Bar, swimming pool, sauna and novelty shops. Local dancers perform traditional dances nightly.

Day 7

After breakfast, depart to the Maasai Mara arriving for lunch at your camp. Enjoy an afternoon game viewing activity then return later as the sun sets, for dinner.

The Maasai Mara is Kenya’s most famous wildlife reserve, much the setting for the film Out of Africa. It is classic savannah – grasslands, where animals are plentiful and the vistas spectacular. In this dreamlike land, animals live in freedom, and the Maasai tend their cattle, all sharing the same land with minimal conflict. You will have three days of wildlife viewing opportunities in the Maasai Mara Reserve, also known as the “Jewel of Africa,” a site with one of the largest and the most spectacular animal migrations in the world. The reserve is inhabited by many of Africa's most popular wild animals, including lion, cheetah, elephant, leopard, black rhino and hippo. There are also over 500 resident species of birds in the park including ostrich, larks and sunbirds as well as the lovely Lilac-breasted Roller.

The area is famous for rolling grassland and for the Mara River, which runs through the reserve from north to south. The reserve covers an area of 700 square miles and forms part of the Serengeti ecosystem, hosting the world famous spectacle of the annual migration of up to two million wildebeest, thousands of zebra and an escort of carnivores from the Serengeti plains that follow the rains and succulent new grass. A costly trek as many of the lame, laggard and sick will fall prey to the ravening pack of predators and many more will die in the swirling flood waters of the Mara River as they try to cross it. The Mara also has one of the highest concentrations of cheetah on the continent, as well as many magnificent black-maned lions.
